After a month’s worth of rain in one day, the sun decided to shine on the second home game of the season for the NSGSC WSPL team in Sunday afternoon.
It was the perfect setting for the second leg of a weekend head to head, following an on the road defeat at the ISC Gunners the previous evening.
The crowd was not disappointed, as the NSGSC came out fighting right from the start. There was plenty of action in the first half, with both goalkeepers being tested.
North Shore fans only had to wait 11 minutes after the break for the opening goal, with Rheanne Sleiman sliding one low and to the right of the Gunners keeper, following an assist from Jaclyn Sawicki.
The team pressed home the advantage shortly after when a slick pass from Nicole Ambrose finding Emma Fletcher, who skillfully took the ball around the keeper for a nice tap in.
The Gunners did not sit back, and countered minutes later with the first of two PK’s of the afternoon. Goalkeeper Rebecca Defer diving the right way, but the ball was just out of reach.
A second goal a few minutes later tied the game at 2-2.
North shore took the lead again, after a header from Shelby Beck beat the goalie, only to rebound off the crossbar. Jaclyn Sawicki was perfectly positioned to strike the ball for to take the lead again.
ISC Gunners continued to press right until the final whistle, and were awarded a controversial penalty kick in the dying seconds of the game. They converted to tie the game at 3-3.
It was a very entertaining afternoon which saw the NSGSC team gel nicely, providing the crowd with a spirited and entertaining performance, and earning the team their first point of the season.
