The Whitecaps were in a difficult position heading into Wednesday’s game with NYCFC. The visitors, sitting 3rd in the Eastern Conference, had built up a 4-game winning streak, which they were looking to extend to a franchise record at BC Place. In previous the two previous meetings between the clubs, the ‘caps have come off second best in both.
In addition to the above the home team were reeling from a 4-0 defeat at the hands of league leaders Chicago Fire.
After this, it was pretty much one way traffic for the remainder of the period, with David Ousted called on to make a number of dramatic saves. Despite his best efforts however the visitors went into the break 2-1 ahead, after a scrambled goal by Maxime Chanot, and a penalty kick from David Villa following a controversial call.
Whatever Carl Robinson said to the team at half time clearly had an impact and the Whitecaps came out fighting, and pretty much dominated the second half. A sublime goal from Jordan Harvey nine minutes into the half was followed by a diving header from Yordy Reyna, who was just back from injury, and had a fantastic game.
The Whitecaps held on comfortably, despite pressure from the visitors.
