After failing to overcome the San Jose Earthquakes in the final regular season home game of the season just 10 days ago, the Whitecaps last night had to face the same opponents in the knock out round of the MLS Cup.
Despite several chances for both teams, which brought out some spectacular saves, it took until the 33rd minute before the deadlock was broken. Fredy Montero capitalized on a through ball from Kendall Waston, off a Techera corner, to score his first ever playoff goal.
The ‘caps did not take so long in the second half to press home their advantage, with a specular goal from Christian Techera from a direct free kick, which looped over the wall into the top left of the net giving Andrew Tarbell no chance.
At this point in the game it was all Vancouver, after several more chances, Kendall Waston but the host up 3-0 on a ball from Tim Parker.
Finally Nicolas Mezquida came off the bench to score two goals in two minutes to end a night of misery for the ‘quakes, and set up a PNW tie with local rivals Seattle Sounders. The first leg of the Western Semi-Final tie is at BC Place on Sunday October 29th, 530pm.
